The study of the Interpretation of Statutes occupies a central position in legal education and judicial practice. This book has been prepared with the objective of providing students, teachers, legal practitioners, judicial aspirants, and researchers with a comprehensive, systematic, and up-to-date understanding of the principles governing statutory interpretation. It explains the meaning, nature, scope, and classification of statutes before examining the established rules of interpretation, including the literal, golden, mischief, and purposive approaches. The book also discusses important legal maxims, presumptions of statutory interpretation, the provisions of the General Clauses Act, 1897, and the distinction between interpretation and construction.

About the Author

Dr. Vir Narayan is a distinguished academician and a prominent figure in the Indian legal fraternity, currently serving as the Director of Research, Dean of Law, & Dean of Student Welfare (DSW) at Vikrant University, Gwalior. With a career spanning over 15 years, Dr. Vir Narayan has established himself as a versatile leader in higher education & a visionary in legal research. A JRF Qualified scholar, he possesses a profound expertise in Constitutional Law, a field in which he is widely recognized for his analytical depth and scholarly contributions. His academic portfolio is marked by a prolific research output, including more than 50 published research papers and book chapters in prestigious international journals.

Dr. Gyanendra Singh is an accomplished academician and researcher in the field of Pharmaceutical Sciences, holding a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Engineering & Technology from the prestigious IIT (BHU), Varanasi. He is currently serving as Associate Director (Research) & Professor in the School of Pharmacy at Vikrant University, Gwalior (MP), Bharat. With over a decade of rich teaching and research experience across various esteemed institutions in India, he has made significant contributions to the scientific community through numerous research publications in national and international journals, along with authoring books and book chapters.

Ms. Ritu Sharma is an Assistant Professor at the School of Legal Studies, Vikrant University, Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh. She is a UGC-NET qualified academician and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in Law. She completed her B.A. LL.B. from Jiwaji University, Gwalior, and earned her LL.M. in Criminal and Security Law from ITM University, Gwalior. With valuable teaching experience in legal education, Ms. Sharma has been actively engaged in imparting legal knowledge and fostering critical thinking among law students. Her areas of interest include Criminal Law, Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, Statutory Interpretation, and contemporary legal issues.

Mr. Kamal Singh, born on October 2, 1969, is a distinguished professional whose career exemplifies the seamless integration of commerce, management, operations, and law. Expanding his expertise into the legal domain, he has also earned LLB and LLM degrees, he built a strong foundation in financial and business principles early on. He further honed his expertise with a Postgraduate Diploma in Material Management and an MBA specializing in Material Management, Human Resources, and Operational Management credentials that propelled him into high-impact roles in institutional administration.
