About the Book

CRISIS AND RESILIENCE IN THE LIVELIHOODS OF TRADITIONAL FARMERS OF KERALA offers a compelling and insightful journey into the heart of Kerala’s agrarian life. At a time when traditional farming faces unprecedented challenges—ranging from climate unpredictability and shrinking landholdings to market instability and changing socio-economic dynamics—this book uncovers both the vulnerabilities and the extraordinary adaptive capacities of farming communities.
Drawing on field experiences, community narratives, and critical analysis, the book highlights how traditional farmers negotiate crises through indigenous knowledge, ecological wisdom, and resilient social networks. It reveals the complex interplay of policy, environment, culture, and economy that shapes agricultural livelihoods in Kerala, while also showcasing inspiring examples of innovation and perseverance.
Richly detailed and deeply human, this work is essential reading for scholars, development practitioners, policymakers, and anyone interested in rural sustainability and agrarian transformation. More than a study of crisis, it is a tribute to resilience—the enduring spirit of farmers who continue to cultivate hope along with their fields.
A thoughtful and timely contribution, this book invites readers to rethink the future of traditional agriculture and the communities that sustain it.
