About the Book
From Chalkboards to Smartboards: The Evolution of Teaching traces the history of teaching across more than a century of change, moving from the oral gurukul tradition through blackboards, whiteboards, radio, television, computers, the internet, smartboards, and now artificial intelligence. Rather than favouring "traditional" or "modern" methods, the book examines each era on its own terms, asking what problem every new tool solved and what it may have cost along the way.
Across eleven chapters, the book also follows the evolving roles of the teacher, from sole source of knowledge to facilitator and mentor, and the learner, from passive recipient to active, self-directed participant. Each chapter combines historical and educational discussion with real classroom examples, an advantages-and-challenges comparison, "Did You Know?" facts, and a dedicated section connecting global developments to the Indian education landscape, including NEP 2020, DIKSHA, EDUSAT, and CBSE's AI curriculum.
Written by Kajal Sharma, Assistant Professor at Chenab College of Education, Jammu, the book is intended for teacher educators, student-teachers, school leaders, and anyone curious about how classrooms evolved and where they may be headed next, offering both a history of teaching technology and a framework for evaluating whatever tool arrives in the classroom next.
