About the Book

Human Factors Engineering In Healthcare: Designing Safe, Efficient, and Patient-Centered Systems

Healthcare is one of the most complex industries in the world, where professionals work in high-pressure environments, interact with advanced technologies, and make critical decisions that directly impact human lives. Despite significant medical and technological advancements, many healthcare errors and inefficiencies still occur due to poor system design, communication gaps, workflow complexity, and human–technology interaction challenges. Human Factors Engineering in Healthcare: Designing Safe, Efficient, and Patient-Centered Systems presents a comprehensive and practical approach to redesigning healthcare systems around human capabilities, safety, efficiency, and patient-centered care.

This book explains how human factors engineering can be applied to healthcare environments to reduce errors, improve workflow design, enhance communication, support clinical decision-making, and optimize healthcare technologies such as electronic health records and artificial intelligence systems. It explores key areas including ergonomics, cognitive workload, teamwork and communication, human–computer interaction, patient safety systems, simulation training, facility design, and high reliability healthcare organizations.

The book combines theory, practical frameworks, real-world examples, and implementation strategies that healthcare organizations can apply to improve safety, operational efficiency, staff performance, and patient experience. It emphasizes that safer healthcare systems are not created by working harder, but by designing smarter systems that support human performance.

Written for healthcare leaders, clinicians, quality professionals, engineers, designers, researchers, and policymakers, this book serves as a strategic and practical guide for building safer, more efficient, and patient-centered healthcare systems for the future.
