About The Book

This book "B.Sc. Physics-V (Introduction to Solid State Physics, Classical and Quantum Mechanics)" is written in accordance with the SEP syllabus prescribed by the Gulbarga University, Kalaburagi and Bidar University Bidar. We wrote this textbook specifically for B.Sc. students to make complex physics clear, simple, and easy to understand. Every effort has been made to make the treatments simple and comprehensive. The difficult topics are explained with the help of clear diagrams.
The core curriculum is systematically organized into eight chapters, transitioning from the structural blueprint of matter to the foundational laws that govern the subatomic world: Chapter 1: Crystal Structure and X-Rays – Establishes the spatial geometry of solids. It introduces Bravais lattices, Miller indices, and explains how X-ray diffraction serves as a powerful microscope to uncover atomic arrangements. Chapter 2: Band Theory of Solids – Explains how electrons move in materials, showing why some things conduct electricity while others act as insulators. Chapter 3: Free Electron Theory of Metals – Investigates the "electron gas" model. It contrasts classical Drude-Lorentz ideas with quantum modifications, explaining thermal and electrical conductivity. Chapter 4: Defects in Solids – Acknowledges that real-world materials are never perfect. This chapter explores point, line, and surface imperfections, illustrating how "structural flaws" are intentionally engineered to alter material strength and behavior. Chapter 5: Superconductivity – Explores the remarkable phenomenon of zero electrical resistance and perfect diamagnetism at low temperatures, and its applications. Chapter 6: Classical Mechanics – Revisits the foundational framework of physics. It transitions students from rigid Newtonian mechanics to the elegant, energy-based formulations of Lagrangian mechanics. Chapter 7: Introduction to Quantum Mechanics – Explains why old physics rules fail for tiny particles and introduces the wave-particle duality of matter, the uncertainty principle, and the necessity of a new mathematical language for the microscopic world. Chapter 8: Foundation of Quantum Mechanics – Teaches you the core math of the quantum world, including how to use the famous Schroedinger equation to find where particles are. Also, they will learn to set up and solve the Schroedinger wave equation for physical systems like the particle in a box and the harmonic oscillator.
