About The Book

The sea has always been a place of opportunity, adventure, and uncertainty. Yet few people truly understand the challenges faced by those who work upon it. Pirate Waters: The Human Story Behind Maritime Security takes readers into a world rarely seen from shore, a world of merchant ships, seafarers, maritime security teams, and the modern threat of piracy.
Drawing upon personal experience and extensive research, AJ Alexander explores how the waters off the Horn of Africa became the centre of one of the most significant maritime security crises of the twenty first century. Beginning with Somalia's rich maritime heritage and the collapse of state authority, the book traces the events that gave rise to modern piracy and examines its impact on global shipping, international trade, and the lives of ordinary seafarers.
More than a book about pirates, this is a story about people. It tells of fishermen struggling to survive, merchant crews navigating dangerous waters, naval forces protecting vital sea lanes, and maritime security professionals standing watch far from home. Through their experiences, readers gain a deeper understanding of the human realities behind the headlines.
Written in an engaging and accessible style, Pirate Waters combines history, maritime security, geopolitics, and personal reflection into a compelling narrative. Whether you are a maritime professional, a student of security studies, a history enthusiast, or simply fascinated by life at sea, this book offers a unique perspective on a chapter of modern maritime history that continues to shape the world today.
