About The Book

CSIR-NET Mathematical Sciences: Previous Year Questions with Detailed Solutions (2021–2026), Unit 4—Probability and Statistics is designed to help aspirants strengthen their conceptual understanding through systematic practice.
The book brings together selected previous-year questions with detailed, step-by-step solutions. Each problem is accompanied by the relevant concepts and methods, helping readers understand the reasoning behind the answer and recognise how similar problems can be approached.
The questions cover probability distributions, statistical inference, regression and linear models, multivariate analysis, stochastic processes, sampling theory, design of experiments, reliability and nonparametric statistics. Particular attention is given to assumptions, interpretation of results and common mistakes.
Organised examination-wise, the book supports both focused practice and revision. Concept notes and an answer index make it convenient for independent study. Primarily intended for CSIR-NET Mathematical Sciences aspirants, this volume also provides useful practice in overlapping topics for GATE Statistics, IIT JAM Mathematical Statistics, ISI entrance examinations and postgraduate statistics courses.

About The Author

Dr. Santosh Kumar Chaudhary* is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Statistics at the Central University of Jharkhand, Ranchi. He earned his Ph.D. in Mathematical Statistics from IIT Kharagpur (2025), an M.Sc. in Statistics from IIT Bombay (2021), an M.Sc. in Mathematics from IIT Delhi (2018) and a B.Sc. (Honours) in Mathematics from the University of Delhi (2015). His achievements in national competitive examinations include All India Rank 3 in GATE, All India Rank 17 in IIT-JAM and All India Rank 50 in CSIR-JRF. Before joining CUJ, he held faculty positions at BIT Mesra, Ranchi, and Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University, Bhubaneswar. His teaching experience spans undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in probability, statistical inference, multivariate analysis, stochastic processes and Bayesian inference. His research interests include information theory, reliability theory, entropy and extropy measures, and statistical inference. He has contributed research articles to peer-reviewed journal. Through his teaching and writing, Dr. Chaudhary emphasises conceptual clarity, mathematical reasoning and a systematic approach to problem-solvig. This volume reflects that approach by connecting examination questions with the statistical principles needed to solve them.
